During a routine long-range test flight, an urgent distress call summons you back to your home system—only to discover it under siege by the formidable Nk'Tawe Empire. This unreleased top-down shooter was provided to eXoDOS by Don Carmical. It is the first time this game has been playable to the public. Developed at Easy Computer Systems (owned and operated by Ross Trimble and Jerry Coffelt), Firestorm was a side project when they weren't working on main projects. It was primarily developed by Don Carmical (programming and game design), Charles Noga (graphics and level design), and Michael Carlson (music and sound effects). Jaimi McEntire (of the SSI game Prophecy of the Shadow) provided the FTL graphics library and Sean Conner assisted with graphics as well.
Don worked a bit on Prophecy of the Shadow and several other games in their spare time, but none of them were ever released. One such unreleased game was called "Cubic" for Windows. It was a match-3 style puzzle game, similar to Tetris Attack, however, it added power-ups such as lasers, slowdowns, bombs, etc.
Firestorm was shopped around to several publishers but was never picked up. Blizzard gave the project the most attention, but ultimately passed, explaining "It's not our kind of game." A shareware release was considered, but other games took priority in the end.
Don provided the following cheats (originally added for testing) as well.
While in-game type:
- MAXMEOUT for all weapons at full power
- MRCOFFEE for maximum speed
I would like to thank Don for providing this game and ensuring its preservation.
